Local Attractions And Walks

Days Out and Local Walks Near The Red Lion, Mortimer West End.

The Red Lion sits in the village of Mortimer West End (RG7 2HU), right on the Hampshire–Berkshire border. We’re surrounded by woodland, open countryside, Roman history and family attractions – all within easy reach of the pub.

Many of our guests like to combine a walk or day out with a relaxed drink or meal here. Some routes start from our door; others are a short drive away, making The Red Lion a handy base for exploring Silchester Roman Town, Benyon's Enclosure, Pamber Forest, The Kennet and Avon Canal and more.

All distances and travel times on this page are approximate and based on typical rural driving and walking speeds. Roads and paths can be narrow, muddy or busy at times, and conditions change through the year. Details may change; please check the official location websites before travelling. This guide is provided for general information only and may contain errors or omissions.

Wherever you choose to go, we hope this guide helps you plan a family-friendly day out with The Red Lion at the heart of it.

Roman Silchester and Ancient Calleva

(Silchester locations below are all around 1–1.5 miles from the pub.)

Silchester Roman Town and Walls (Calleva Atrebatum)

Silchester Roman Town and Walls (Calleva Atrebatum)

Silchester is the site of the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, one of the most important Roman sites in Britain. Today you’ll find grassy earthworks, information boards and a quiet, countryside feel rather than a busy attraction.

From the same visit you can explore inside the former town and follow paths around much of the Roman wall line, enjoying views across fields and into the interior. It’s close enough to The Red Lion to visit before lunch or for a stroll after an early dinner.

  • Approx. distance & travel from The Red Lion: The main Wall Lane car park near the Roman Town (RG7 2HP) is about 1–1.5 miles from the pub – roughly 3–5 minutes by car or 20–30 minutes on foot, depending on route and pace.
  • Dog-friendly: Yes, with restrictions. Dogs are generally welcome on public paths in and around the site; use a lead near livestock, other visitors and where signs request it.
  • Child-friendly: Yes / mostly. Great for school-age children and teenagers who enjoy history and open space. Families comfortable with a few miles of walking can complete much of the walls path; younger children may prefer shorter “there-and-back” sections.
  • Parking: Charged car park off Wall Lane, usually used for both town and wall walks. Details may change; please check latest information before travelling.
  • Terrain & accessibility: A mix of grass and compacted paths with some uneven ground, banks and woodland edges. Parts of the wall circuit can be muddy and sloping. Not fully suitable for wheelchairs or small-wheeled pushchairs.
  • Facilities: Interpretation panels on the site. No café or toilets at the town or walls themselves; many visitors combine with facilities at The Red Lion or nearby villages.
  • Safety notes: Uneven ground, banks, ditches and low branches in places. Wear suitable footwear and supervise children on the earthworks and steeper sections of the banks.
  • Anything unclear: Official sources do not clearly confirm accessibility for every path around the walls, so please plan carefully if anyone in your group has limited mobility, and consider shorter sections rather than the full circuit.

Silchester Roman Amphitheatre

Silchester Roman Amphitheatre

Just outside the walls is the Roman amphitheatre – now a grassed oval with high banks and a central “arena”, still clearly shaped and atmospheric.

  • Approx. distance & travel from The Red Lion: As with the town and walls, around 1–1.5 miles to the Wall Lane car park, 3–5 minutes by car, then a 5–10 minute walk to the amphitheatre. Walking from the pub via lanes and paths typically takes 25–35 minutes each way.
  • Dog-friendly: Yes, with restrictions. Dogs are normally allowed on public paths; keep them on a lead near livestock and other visitors.
  • Child-friendly: Yes. Families often enjoy the open banks and central arena, but slopes can be steep, so close supervision is important.
  • Parking: Park at the Silchester Roman Town car park and follow waymarked paths to the amphitheatre. Details may change; please check latest information before travelling.
  • Terrain & accessibility: Grass paths and banks, uneven in places. Not ideal for wheelchairs or standard pushchairs.
  • Facilities: No separate facilities; combine with a walk and a visit to The Red Lion for refreshments.
  • Safety notes: Steep, sometimes slippery banks; watch for rabbit holes and uneven patches.
  • Anything unclear: Official sources do not clearly state accessibility arrangements here; visitors with limited mobility may prefer viewing from the nearest level point.
