The Red Lion sits in the village of Mortimer West End (RG7 2HU), right on the Hampshire–Berkshire border. We’re surrounded by woodland, open countryside, Roman history and family attractions – all within easy reach of the pub.
Many of our guests like to combine a walk or day out with a relaxed drink or meal here. Some routes start from our door; others are a short drive away, making The Red Lion a handy base for exploring Silchester Roman Town, Benyon's Enclosure, Pamber Forest, The Kennet and Avon Canal and more.
All distances and travel times on this page are approximate and based on typical rural driving and walking speeds. Roads and paths can be narrow, muddy or busy at times, and conditions change through the year. Details may change; please check the official location websites before travelling. This guide is provided for general information only and may contain errors or omissions.
Wherever you choose to go, we hope this guide helps you plan a family-friendly day out with The Red Lion at the heart of it.
(Silchester locations below are all around 1–1.5 miles from the pub.)
Silchester is the site of the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, one of the most important Roman sites in Britain. Today you’ll find grassy earthworks, information boards and a quiet, countryside feel rather than a busy attraction.
From the same visit you can explore inside the former town and follow paths around much of the Roman wall line, enjoying views across fields and into the interior. It’s close enough to The Red Lion to visit before lunch or for a stroll after an early dinner.
Just outside the walls is the Roman amphitheatre – now a grassed oval with high banks and a central “arena”, still clearly shaped and atmospheric.
(Within this section, locations are listed from closest to furthest from the pub.)
Benyon’s Enclosure is a block of woodland close to the pub, with tracks leading to Kiln Pond and West End Brook – a peaceful local beauty spot.
The wider Englefield Estate covers farmland, woods and lakes between Theale, Mortimer and other nearby villages, with public rights of way and some permissive paths.
Pamber Forest and adjoining areas form a large nature reserve of ancient woodland and heath, managed by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
(Mortimer Village is approx 3-4 miles from the pub.)
Local heritage trails around Mortimer and Mortimer West End highlight churches, older buildings and village history, sometimes linked to simple walking routes.
(Family attractions ordered from nearest to furthest.)
Alongside being a walking starting point, Aldermaston Wharf is a pleasant day-out location in its own right, with boats, locks and canal-side views.
Stratfield Saye is the historic home of the Dukes of Wellington, with house tours on selected days and walks in its wider estate.
Wellington Country Park is a large outdoor family attraction with adventure play, animal enclosures, walking trails and seasonal activities, aimed largely at younger children.
